@greeting(Dear Professor Moses:)
@begin(body)
	I'm afraid I can't be very helpful in evaluating Patrick
Winston's recent work, because my own interests have become somewhat
specialized in areas distant from his. In particular, I am no longer
following the literature in vision and robotics.

	I believe I sent a letter a few years ago in connection with
Winston's tenure, and I still stand by what I said then in evaluation
of his earlier work. Our paths have crossed several times recently
in connection with his Directorship of the M.I.T. Artificial
Intelligence Laboratory and in connection with his work in organizing
the 1977 IJCAI at M.I.T. and in connection with his earlier service
as program chairman of the very trying 1975 IJCAI held in the Soviet
Union.

	He has been more successful in keeping the M.I.T. Artificial
Intelligence Laboratory as a functioning organization than I have been
with the Stanford Artificial Intelligence Laboratory. Everyone in
the field admires the organization and spirit of the M.I.T. AI Laboratory
and its continued stream of innovative work. His work in connection
with the IJCAIs was also outstanding.

Sincerely,

John McCarthy
